For everyone in Topeka and surrounding communities in Kansas, spring is upon us and so are the dandelions! These famous yellow weeds can take over your property and leave you with a rough, unsightly looking lawn. Although there is not much that can be done to prevent the dandelion seeds making their landing on your property, there are some ways to control the dandelions on your lawn. The Topeka lawn care experts at Schendel Lawn & Landscape have some control tips that everyone should consider this spring.
Dandelions, which are a perennial weed do have many great benefits including healing teas, flavoring on salads, and more. But when they infest our lawn they create rough looking weed patches and they can quickly spread if left alone. Since seeds can travel several miles in the wind, it is impossible to prevent any seeds from landing on your property but if you do notice the signs of dandelions here are some control methods:
- If there are just a few dandelions popping up go ahead and weed them manually. Dig down to make sure you are pulling up the entire root. Just pulling the stem will not solve your dandelion problem.
- Do not let the yellow flowers turn into the puffy looking seeds that were fun as kids to blow around. At the very least, pick off the head of the flower so that it does not have a chance to spread more seeds.
- By mowing your lawn on a regular basis, but on a higher setting, you will be able to control the spread and growth of dandelions. The mower will chop off any flowers and by keeping the grass at a higher level, the shade of grass will inhibit the growth of more dandelions since they require full sunlight.
- You can spread corn gluten across your lawn to prevent the growth of new dandelions. This is a great, all-natural method of prevention although it does need to be reapplied each month and it does not kill dandelions already on your lawn.
