Now that the weather has turned cold, pests such as mice and rats are looking for warm places to spend the winter. Make sure they don’t choose your home! We have some information and tips on keeping your home free from rodents from our sister company, Green Pest Solutions.

Rodents aren’t just unpleasant to have in your home; they also spread disease and can cause damage. Mice and rats spread salmonella bacteria and hantavirus, and they can also carry other pests into your home, such as ticks, fleas, and lice. Rodents also like to chew and can cause significant damage, including fires when they chew threw electrical wiring.

Once they move into a home, their population can easily explode: A female mouse can have as many as 12 babies every three weeks. It’s easier to prevent an infestation than it is to control one, so we wanted to share these tips from the National Pest Management Association to keep your home rodent-free:

  • Secure your home. Seal cracks and holes on the outside of your home to help prevent mice and rats from using easy entry ways. Pay special attention to areas where utilities and pipes enter the home. Replace loose mortar and weather stripping around the basement foundation and windows.
  • Don’t build rodent attractions near your home. Store firewood at least 20 feet from the home and five feet off the ground. Keep shrubberies cut back from the house.
  • Make sure your home isn’t rodent-friendly. Rodents can hide in clutter, so keep areas clear, and store boxes off the floor. (All those empty Amazon boxes make excellent harborage sites, so avoid letting them collect in your garage.) Eliminate all moisture sites, including leaking pipes and clogged drains. Keep food in rodent-proof containers.
